Finite Matters Ltd.'s Revolutionary
Desktop Database Publishing Software
"Database
Publishing Done Right!"
Welcome to the PatternStream
web site that provides information about Finite Matters Ltd. (FML)'s PatternStream
application and related services for customers requiring database
publishing solutions for print media and digital formats.
PatternStream is a software application
that allows users to rapidly setup, test, modify, run, and save
database publishing projects. Setup is accomplished using a graphical
user interface (GUI) without the need to learn a programming
language or meta-language. PatternStream publishes to print and
electronic distribution media, satisfying the promise of the
single source publishing system.
PatternStream generates Adobe® FrameMaker®, PostScript®, and Acrobat
(pdf) files to publish to print - and Acrobat, XML, and
HTML files for web distribution. PatternStream can also directly
generate Microsoft Excel files to enable information distribution
in spreadsheet form and mark-up files (e.g., HTML, XML, etc.).
PatternStream can be used on
the web as an engine to create dynamic PDF - user defined Acrobat files published
from databases via a browser.
PatternStream can obtain information
from any open database connectivity (ODBC) and standard query
language (SQL) compliant database. This includes all of the major
database products from IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, Sybase, and others.
In addition to databases, PatternStream
can use input from other file types as part of document creation
including a wide variety of images, word processing and desktop
publishing, text, Acrobat. This information can be automatically
imported and placed where it is needed in the final document
- along with database information.
FML's PatternStream application
and its associated database publishing architecture have been
used to publish numerous types of complex page layouts from a
variety of data sources. Take a look at various examples in the
customer solutions pages. To learn more about the PatternStream
database publishing application, look at the PatternStream pages
including the question
and answer pages. For information about acquiring assistance
to begin a database project, see our Alliances or FML Services pages. If you're

To date we have not encountered
a print format that cannot be published from a database using
PatternStream and FrameMaker. From the simplest directories to
the most complex catalogs and from the smallest two page report
to the longest reference book, our systems can efficiently and
cost effectively publish them all!
That's in addition to PatternStream's
digital file format output capabilities which include PDF, HTML,
XML, and XLS (Excel) - and can be created concurrently with print
output.
But don't believe us, here's
what some of our customers say about their PatternStream experiences:
"FML helped us with setup,
and provided a solution that allowed us to focus on the content
of our documents rather than the mechanics of publishing.
Now, our personnel can update and publish budgets with minimal
setup and without any additional programming. We can easily convert
the published documents to PDF for distribution to citizens and
employees, too."
Leslie Crowell
Budget Manager, Office of Budget and Analysis
County of Santa Clara, California
"PatternStream gave us the control and flexibility to
produce our complicated 700 page membership directory in-house,
saving us thousands of dollars in outside composition costs and
reducing our print schedule by more than three months!"
Jaynee Dudley
Manager Educational Products
Association for Investment Management and Research (AIMR)
"Time savings and cost savings, etc.? Time and cost for
me to produce a catalog using PatternStream versus the previous
method isn't an issue of time and money. Before, I couldn't do
the job; with PatternStream, I get the job done. Its no
catalog versus catalog, no tool versus good tool, mow your grass
with your teeth versus mow with a 6HP John Deere."

"PatternStream is much
less labor intensive than our previous method. We are planning
to move the production of all of database publications to PatternStream
because of the speed it provides."
